About
This website is an interface meant for browsing a database on Khotanese words and texts. It was designed by Jules Bouton and Valentine Guillocheau as a complement of Valentine Guillocheau's master thesis Forms and functions of the *-ka- suffixes in Khotanese, written under the supervision of Philip Huyse (CeRMI) at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris).
You can download the full SQLite database by clicking this button:
What does this website contain?
The focus of the database is to collect Khotanese forms containing a *-ka- suffix, which is reflected by the contents of the "Lemmas" tab. It basically contains all the lexemes with a suffix -ka- or -aa- that were identified by Degener (1989). The scope of this database can however be much wider, and the "Texts" tab may be useful to other people working on the Khotanese corpus.
Its content aims at gathering the most important data available on the Khotanese texts. I began by simply reorganizing in the shape of a table the information provided by Maggi (2009), namely:
- the title of the text, its abbreviation and its translation;
- the text genre, its approximate length (in folios), its date (when known);
- whether it is Old Khotanese or Late Khotanese;
- whether it is versified or not;
- whether it is a translation or not, from which language, and with what degree of fidelity.
I also included Maggi's short summary of the texts and some of his bibliographic indications concerning the editions or translations available for those texts. It is possible to easily refer back to Maggi (2009) thanks to the systematic references to the pages where each text is discussed. The only data I personnally added is the number of words of each text on Titus, a measure that allows a better overview of the Khotanese corpus (see below for a diagram representing the structure of the corpus, by stage of language and genre). I will progressively include data from other sources, starting with Emmerick (1992), and gradually adding more specialised works.
The interface of the "Texts" tab can also be used as a concordance with the editions of the Khotanese texts which are to be found on the Thesaurus Indogermanischer Text- und Sprachmaterialien (Titus). Below each text in the datagrid presentation, one can find links to the corresponding passage(s) in Titus. Conversely, one can easily find the origin of a text from Titus by typing its reference in Bailey's editions (e.g. KT5_168) in a text research on the same page.
This work goes hand in hand with another adaptation of Titus data, which is the extraction of all the Khotanese texts it contains as a .cvs file (available on request). Each line contains one Khotanese word, with its precise reference provided by Titus, but also with key information on this text (title, date, genre) provided by the database, when possible.
